The Buddha bowl.  The decadent, personalized masterpiece that resembles that of the belly of the Buddha.  While there are numerous, countless, infinite ways to make one, I have spent the last two weeks going to town with combinations and toppings and I think I have mastered the simple breakdown to perfecting the art of the bowl.  There's so many reasons why these bad boys have become my recent obsession, but it boils down to the fact that -
1. You know exactly what's in it, and what's in it is healthy AF
2. There are so many variations and you end up using practically everything in your fridge and pantry creating a new flavour or vibe every single night.

So what exactly is a Buddha bowl? I'm so glad you asked.  It's an oversized bowl resembling the belly of the Buddha, a.k.a. a combination of grains, veggies and protein to create a flavour explosion in your mouth that leaves your stomach in a sweet state of zen.  They can be hearty and filling or light and quick, mexican inspired or asian infused! No matter how you decide to dress it up and eat it down, here is a simple breakdown that will ensure a tastebud frenzy each and every time.

1. THE BOWL
I mean realistically this part may not be important to most, but I like picking cute colourful bowls or large wooden ones just to add to that "it's not snow-storming outside my window what are you talking about? I'm in the lush greens of Bali eating my bowl and doing my yoga" feeling.

2. YOUR BASE
This can be anything from greens (spinach, arugula, lettuce, kale, mixed greens, etc.), rice, noodles, potatoes, quinoa, butternut squash - basically the foundation to your bowl.

3. THE HEART
Optional depending how light you want your bowl, but I like to make this either a protein or a fat, something that will leave me feeling full.
Some ideas - tofu, vegan "meats", beans, avocado, lentils, chick peas

4. SOME TEXTURES
Anything you could pick from a garden, throw it in.
Cucumbers, tomatoes, roasted mushrooms and onions, red peppers, edamame, corn, eggplant, carrots, asparagus, broccoli - all the plants.

5. DRESS IT UP
You can't leave the bowl naked.
Hummus, mustard, soy sauce, salsa, guacamole, sriracha, teriyaki, hot sauce, balsamic reduction, vinegar, any kind of sauces or dressings!

6. THE TOPPERS
Like adding a bow to the gift.
Nuts, seeds, salad toppers, garnishing herbs, seasonings, green onions, garlic, the possibilities are endless.

7. EAT
and feel zen.
